Frames were perhaps the stupidest thing that web pages can hold. I have yet to find a site that looks decent with frames. There are many other things to say, but those contain "inappropriate" language.

I used to read book reviews in The Sunday Times (London) until they "upgraded" the site with F-F-F-F- I can't bring myself to say the F word. Now, they have this noxious F-construction which squooshes the text and gives me a headache - don't need it!

Usually when I see a home page with frames, it reminds me of a teenage kid's car: a butt-ugly old Cutlass Supreme, somewhat rusty, with every possible gadget - sunroof, foglights, neon license plate frame, spoiler on the trunk lid, etc.

I admit it, I'm not a web design whiz. I don't know HTML backwards and forwards, I don't know the technical advantages of frames. All I know is, they're annoying. I recently went to a site (I believe it was a personal home page) and there were, I swear, no less than 10 frames scatterred about the screen. WHY, PEOPLE? FOR GOD'S SAKE, WHY?

Frames are all very well for users with 17+ inch monitors. the reality is that most non-corporate users are back in 15-inch monitor land and they're just damned annoying. the only advantage frames have in my view, is from a design point of view - if you've got a website with a few hundred pages and you want to totally change the way your site is organised, then just by changing one page, you can change navigation on them all. Or you could just plan ahead. Frames annoy me.

Consider the following URL: http://members.xoom.com/XNTJ/oddpage1.html This odd tidbit was shown to me by a friend when Netscape 2.01 was just out and frames were a novelty. Look at it carefully. It illustrates one fundamental hole in the frames definition no browser is prepared to handle well, namely, recursive frames. After a certain level of recursion most browsers crash, those that don't crash, hog so much system resources it stops being funny.

Conclusion: Frames might have had a nice use when they were invented, unfortunately, neither browsers' programmers nor web designers took it seriously enough to implement it right. We all know frames suck, it's a given, now, to have it our way, we need to think of something to make them stop doing so. And if abolishing them is not possible, taming them might be a solution.
